Think your child may benefit from therapy but don’t know where to start?
Concerned about the effect of the pandemic and quarantine on your child?
Want to help your child build resilience, be able to handle challenges with less difficulty, and communicate feelings?
What is Wave Cruisers?
Wave Cruisers is a small, telehealth-based group designed to teach and enhance emotion regulation skills among K to 2nd graders (about 5-8 yo) in an engaging, interactive format. We will meet weekly for 45 minutes for a total of 8 sessions. Content of the original curriculum is based on a research-proven method called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, tailored for the attention spans and skills of this age group. Wave Cruisers is a great option for children who may need some extra help with emotion regulation, for children who have difficulty with one-on-one therapy sessions, or as a primer for individual therapy.
Is this group a good fit for my child?
Best suited for kids who…
Are in K to 2nd grade (about 5-8 yo)
Have basic reading skills
Can pay attention to a 15 minute “lesson”
Feel comfortable participating on a video platform
Thrive with structure, including a prepared lesson and activity
Have anxiety or mood problems that are starting to interfere with daily life
Why group therapy?
Group therapy provides…
Understanding that other kids struggle sometimes too
Feelings of connection within a group
Peer models to imitate
Lower “risk” setting to talk about emotions than individual therapy (e.g., less anxiety due to predictability, schedule, and taking “turns”)
A more affordable option than individual therapy
Why Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?
Evidence-based treatment (i.e., research supported, so we know it works)
Effective in young children
May improve quality of life and self-esteem
You’ll need…
Stable Internet connection and device with a camera and microphone
Quiet area where your child can participate (preferably sitting on the floor or at a desk with computer or ipad stable in front of them)
To be nearby or with your child but out of the camera’s view (for tech support and behavior management if needed)
Group materials (printed and gathered individually or shipped kit for extra cost TBD)
To practice skills between group sessions to support learning (suggestions will be provided on a weekly Parent Handout)
